Welcome to the Foreign Language Department!

Foreign language classes allow students to emerge themselves in a new culture and language. The classes teach basic grammar and vocabulary that can be used to communicate with native speakers. Students also learn the culture and history of other countries. As our society continues to broaden with new languages, knowing either French or Spanish helps students in the workforce along with daily activities. Our hands-on approach makes learning a new language both fun and easy.

FRENCH 1

This is a yearlong course for students wishing to begin learning the French language.

Throughout this course the student will learn how and be able to:

·         Write and read simple sentences in the present and future tense

·         Listen and understand spoken French on a variety of topics (family, school, etc)

·         Begin speaking by answering questions in complete phrases in French

·         Recognize, and compare different cultures/countries  and customs where French is spoken

FRENCH 2

This is a yearlong course for students who have taken French 1 and wish to continue learning more in-depth French grammar and vocabulary.

The student will be able to:

·         Write and read complex sentences in the present, future, past and imperfect tense

·         Listen, understand and respond in French to a variety of topics (holidays, food, health, etc).

·         Have a more in-depth cultural understanding of countries/cultures where French is spoken

·         Prerequisite: French 1

French 3

This is a yearlong course for students who have taken French 1 and French 2 and wish to continue learning more in-depth French grammar and vocabulary.

The student will be able to:

·         Use French language only in the classroom (speaking and listening)

·         Read simple French stories/novels that use a variety of verb tenses

·         Write complete sentences and paragraphs using more complex verb tenses

·         Continue to have a more in-depth cultural understanding of countries/cultures where French is spoken

·         Prerequisite: French 1 and French 2

Grading Procedures: French

Assignments are weighted in the following way

Tests = 50%

Projects / Quizzes = 15%

Homework = 10%

Daily Assignments / Participation = 5%

Students may turn in late assignments, but they are marked down 2 points every week they are late. For example, if an assignment is due on the first of the month, if students turn it from the 2nd through the 7th it will be marked off 2 points.
