Welcome to Physical Education!
Meet Mr. Smith
I am so excited to teach Physical Education at Roosevelt! The staff and children are so amazing.
Before teaching Physical Education, I taught in Roosevelt’s Paxton lab and United States History. Before coming to Roosevelt, I taught honors World History and government at the old Woodruff High School where I also coached football.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Monmouth College in 1987. I recently (2013) earned my masters degree in Education Administration from Illinois State University.
I look forward to inspiring my students to appreciate and enjoy learning to be physically fit in a fun, safe and inspired environment. I encourage each child to have a healthy attitude toward life-time fitness while teaching him/her a variety of success oriented activities.
I have lived in the greater Peoria area most of my life. In fact, my father was a 1941 graduate of Roosevelt and has returned to visit and speak to the children on many occasions.
My philosophy of Physical Education is to develop both the mind and body through movement. Physical Education is an integral part of your child’s education that contributes to his/her growth and development. It is the goal to give your child a positive P.E. experience and to help him/her gain an appreciation of the importance of staying healthy through lifetime fitness and recreational activities. Your child will have experiences in individual, team, and group activities that place an emphasis on participation, cooperation, and success through personal goals. In addition, a continued emphasis on nutrition and health will be explored through activities provided in the district adopted curriculum.
A key element that contributes to a student’s success and well-being is safety. While in P.E. classes students need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Clothing should be conducive to movement. It is recommended that girls do not wear skirts or dresses on P.E. days. Children should wear Physical Education appropriate shoes on PE days. Shoes should be lace-up and have rubber soles.
