New student orientation was May 7th at 6:30pm. Any family wanting a tour can call the school.  Informational packets were handed out in the foyer before the program. Parents and students saw a presentation about Reservoir Gifted, met the principal and staff members.  New students split into small groups for a tour of the school and get-to-know-each-other time. Current Reservoir Gifted students headed up the student groups in order to answer questions. Parents remained in the gym to learn more about gifted students and the gifted program here at Reservoir Gifted.  If a student does not get accepted to RGA for 5th grade, they can reapply for 6th grade.

If parents were unable to attend this night, packets can be picked up in the Reservoir Gifted office. We do ask that parents fill out and return this sheet from the packet at the orientation or as soon as possible.

--All students are encouraged to read plenty of books over the summer and to participate in the Peoria Public Library Summer Reading Program.

Summer Bigs/Littles Assignments

New students will be assigned a 'Big', a student already familiar with Reservoir Gifted, to help them out before school starts and continuing throughout the school year. New students should expect a phone call from their Big in July or early August. Plan on attending Wildcat Eve for locker set up and a light dinner. If new students miss this locker set-up day, they will have plenty of time to set up lockers on the first day of school. 

The supply list for Reservoir Gifted is available on this website. This list is different from the Peoria School District list. Students will be issued a Reservoir Gifted Planner which costs $7.00. Students may not substitute a different planner, as the Reservoir Gifted planner contains the Student Handbook and all Hall Passes. 

Summer Reading and Math Programs

Don’t let 3 months of no school drive away all that your child accomplished and learned this year! Help your child succeed this summer. Peoria has so much to offer-- take advantage of it! Check out the Peoria Public Library summer reading program , Bradley University's Summer Reading Programs, the Proctor Center Summer Fun Academy, ICC's College for Kids Program, Common Place's Summer Programs, Sylvan Learning Centers' skill help in Reading, Math, Study Skills and more.

--Check out the Peoria Public Library Kid Events, they have fun programs for middle schoolers and high schoolers! Sign up for their summer reading program, and help Reservoir Gifted get the most participants for the 24th straight year!

--If you are going on a car trip, grab an audiobook and listen to something exciting. I recommend 'The True Meaning of Smekday' by Adam Rex, 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone' by JK Rowling, or Cressida Cowell's Dragon series. These are fun stories with great voices.

--PPL also has Tumblebooks! With your Library Card you will be able to use the Tumblebook Library, a collection of animated books as well as Tumblebook Cloud Junior, a collection of videos and YA/Teen Chapter Books as well as audio books. There is even a mobile version so you can watch or listen on your portable device.

--Bradley University offers the Summer Reading Programs for Children and Adults. They have eight different reading skills programs designed and taught by instructors from the Institute of Reading Development (IRD). For more information and to register, call (800) 978-9596.

--Proctor is offering the Proctor Center Summer Fun Academy for middle school kids. Mornings offer out-of-the-box teaching in math, science and reading, with sports and other extracurricular activities all afternoon. Register through the Peoria Park District.

--Common Place also offers Summer Programs - Summer youth programs, giving neighborhood young people 8-15 years old a chance for study, chores and an allowance  of $25 per week. Study includes values, wise choices, nutrition. Chores include weeding, distributing flyers, environmental awareness. Field trips to places of interest in the Peoria area. Summer tutoring of school age children .Summer tutoring provides academic help (remedial or enrichment) for children in kindergarten through 12th grades twice a week for 7 weeks. Find a Book is a fun and easy way to select books based on a child’s Lexile measure and interests. You can use this free search tool to build custom lists for readers at all ability levels, and then locate your selections at the local public library. 

--The Summer Math Challenge is a FREE math skills maintenance program targeted to students who have just completed grade 2 through 6 and is designed to help children retain math skills learned during the previous school year.
