Choiceboard:
1. Whenever you learn or practice a skill it’s a good idea to keep some basics in mind. Do you remember the parts of speech? There are 8. List them and for each one: give a definition and an illustrated example in color (a picture that demonstrates the word)
2. Write a conversation between a pencil and a computer. It should be long enough to tell a story (at least one page). Pay attention when punctuating dialogue.
3. Think about what it would be like to be a tree, especially in fall. Create a comic strip that has a talking tree as a character. The comic strip should have at least 6 panels and be illustrated in color.
4. Invent a new piece of playground equipment and explain how it works. What special features will your new equipment have? Who will like playing on it? Where would be the best place for this equipment? This should include a paragraph of explanation and a color drawing of your invention.
5. Which color is most like you? Explain why you think this color is like you. Then, write a poem based on the ideas you wrote. After, create a picture or other visual representation of the poem.
6. Would you rather be the wind or the rain? Explain the reasons for your choice. Write a fable that includes either the wind or the rain as the main character. What lesson will you try to teach in the fable?
7. What is your favorite school subject? Explain why it is your choice. Create an advertisement for your favorite school subject. Design your advertisement to interest other students to take the same course.
8. What important tips would you offer someone for success in school. Create a small pamphlet or flyer offering your suggestions for succeeding in school.
9. You have just seen a “dalumph” for the first time. What is it? How is it used? Write a detailed description answering the above questions and also include how you came into contact with it.
10. What does a hurt feeling look like? Draw one and then write a detailed description
of it.
11. You’ve been hired as a writer for a Chinese restaurant. Write 20 fortunes for the cookies.
12. Your bedroom is a mess. Write and illustrate a warning sign to hang on your bedroom door. Write a humorous list of suggestions for keeping your bedroom clean.
13. A “whopper” is a huge, usually humorous, lie. Tall tales are based on a series of “whoppers” about legendary heroes like Paul Bunyan. Write a tall tale about such a hero.
14. Think about the word yellow. What comes to mind? Make a list of your thoughts and then use your list of ideas to write metaphors about yellow. Begin each metaphor with “Yellow is…” Arrange your metaphors as a poem.
15. Think of the best book you’ve ever read. Write a letter to the author and tell him or her what the book meant to you and why you liked it so much.
