Hello! My name is Lila Bryant and I am an English teacher at PHS. I am so excited to work alongside your student as we delve into the rich world that ELA has to offer!
While enrolled in my course, your student will engage with a variety of multimodal texts. An emphasis is placed on written and visual texts. We divide readings that coincide with our units into fictional and non-fiction work, which will prepare students for AP Seminar (sophomore year), English II Enriched, AP Language (junior year) and AP Literature (senior year).
Assessments in my English courses are student-driven (with the occasional common assessment for final exams). Students get a chance to showcase their creativity through choice work projects that can often include various artwork, as drawing, coloring, and other forms of artwork have been proven to be relaxing for students. It is also another way for visual and tactile learners to showcase their learning alongside the written word.
Texts in my English courses are meant to be windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors into other worlds. To be successful in my course, students are expected to apply an introspective look at the texts that we interact with. As the quarters progress, students are expected to perform an increasingly higher level of Bloom's taxonomy in their work. For example, while we start with "define these words as they pertain to the text" at the beginning of the first quarter, by the end of the third quarter, students should be able to write approximately 500 words "correlating the events in the text to events as they may appear in the real world" with research and proper citations used.
Please view the English Texts sidebar at the left of the screen to view the texts (an ongoing and updated list) used in my English courses. I provide a variety of texts for students. Some texts are abridged for length and content. Should you have any questions, concerns, and comments, please email me at lila.bryant@psd150.org
I look forward to partnering with you to provide a successful and enriching time for your student in my English course for this school year.
